John Magombo on Saturday stole the show at the 2017 Bollore Transport & Logistics Malawi Limited Invitational Golf tournament when he achieved a hole-in-one at Nchalo Sports Club (NSC) in Chikwawa.

The rare feat saw the veteran golfer outshining the overall winner Bregger Kaingwe who posted 39 points to beat a 49 strongfield in the event played on individual stableford format.

Ironically, Magombo was the winner of last year’s tournament.

“Being the defending champion I gave myself a target that if I would not win then I should do something exceptional and I guess this is it,” he said.

To add extra spice, Magombo also won the seniors’ category with 34 points.

Mac Chitatanga was Kaingwe’s runner-up with 37 points while Tarang Makhecha came third with 32 points.

Kaingwe, who also had the longest drive on hole 14, said birdies on holes 4 and 7 coupled with a par on hole 3, were the centrepiece of his victory. Teri Amaro registered 32 points to win the ladies’ category.

Eric Kazembe was nearest to the pin on hole 18 whereas Wilma Chalulu had the longest drive in ladies’ section. Makhecha, Andrew Ngomwa and McChancy Mkamanga had two clubs.

Bollore country managing director Phillippe Niamkey pledged continued sponsorship of the event.

“I was asked to keep this event going and to me, tradition has to be prevailed and we will keep on coming for years and more years to come. We have been in partnership with Illovo Sugar for years and we would like this partnership to get stronger and stronger,” he said.

Niamkey said the tournament provides them an opportunity to interact with their partners, especially Illovo Sugar. He, therefore, pledged improved provision of logistical services to their customers.

NSC golf captain John Mphande thanked Bollore for their continued sponsorship of the tournament. n
