The media have been asked to maintain peace and those announcing results have been urged to always put a disclaimer that the results are unofficial, MEC chairperson Justice Maxon Mbendera has said.

Mbendera said this when he delivered a statement that has been signed by all political parties, civil society organisations and all electoral stakeholders.

MEC had called for a meeting with stakeholders and political parties earlier today to give them an update on the elections progress. This he said was done in order to enhance transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

“The commission also informed stakeholders that it was facing challenges of slow transmission of results on the result management system. In order to speed up the process MEC has added extra measures that include fax system and physical movement of forms.”

The MEC chairperson assured the nation that it is doing all it can to deliver credible results.

Voting in some parts of Blantyre and Lilongwe took place from today morning and was expected to end today. Release of results according to Mbendera will take place within eight days from the last day of voting.
