Wadi and his accomplice, Lisford Zinyongo, who also happens to be the unit’s station officer, allegedly beat up Atibu Mussa with a sjambok after incarcerating him on suspicion that he caused violence on Christmas Eve at a social joint at Mpilipili in the district.

The act irked the community who petitioned Mangochi Police Station officer-in-charge Elijah Kachikuwo to transfer the duo from the area within 48 hours.

Confirming the transfer, Kachikuwo said he has only managed to transfer Wadi to Mangochi Police Station because he can only make such decisions for officers below a certain grade.

Said Kachikuwo: “I can confirm that I have transferred Wadi because he holds a junior position [constable] which, according to the powers conferred upon me I am mandated to [transfer such officers], but for the other officer who holds a senior position I have just submitted a report to my superiors to make a decision.

“Following the incident, I have met members of the community and we have formed a grouping which will look into the welfare of suspects in custody to ensure that they are not mistreated.” n
