Makawa’s Epac return lasts two days
Abbas Makawa’s return as Epac caretaker coach lasted just two days this week after he decided against continuing drilling the Lilongwe outfit which earlier released him.
“It is difficult to understand the whole issue, but it is part of life. They know the truth. It is true that I was with them for two to three days, but I have since stopped training the team. There are some issues that have not been sorted out,” said Makawa who was released alongside his panel over poor results.
Epac had recalled Makawa to step in for interim coach Phillip Nyasulu who is now helping the Flames as goalkeeper trainer.
But now it is back to square one for Epac, whose general secretary Roy Mdechi on Tuesday defended the team’s decision to dump the coach who steered them to the Super League in 2011.
“We did not fire the coaching panel. We just suspended them indefinitely. Even if a new coach comes in, Abbas will still be around in another capacity; it could be as a deputy coach depending on the experience of whoever comes in,” said Mdechi.
But Makawa was diplomatic about the handling of his
suspension, admitting that having served the team for five years, he expected at least to be heard, which never happened.
Epac finished 11th last season, when they produced Ishmael Thindwa as the TNM Super League Golden Boot Award winner on 15 goals; for the second time in the club’s three-year presence in the Super League.
