People from Traditional Authority (T/A) Makhwira in Chikwawa were all smiles on Sunday following the reopening of Makhwira Police Unit which was vandalised by communities three years ago.

Chikwawa Police Station officer-in-charge Alex Simenti opened the new structure with a warning to the communities not to take the law into their own hands.

He said: “I have been feeling sorry for the citizens of East Bank, specifically under Traditional Authority Makhwira that you used to walk a distance of about 40 kilometres to get police assistance at Chikwawa Boma.

“This is the reason I facilitated to deploy my officers here because whenever we had incidents that required our attention, we needed fuel to send our officers here which was not easy in most cases.”

T/A Makhwira warned his subordinates that he will not condone anyone who will vandalise the police structure.

“It is your people who used to demolish police structures, but this time around if your subordinates are found doing so, I will dethrone you,” warned the chief.

The reopening ceremony was graced by members of the community who included traditional leaders, ward councillor for the Makhwira North, who is also Chikwawa District Council vice-chairperson, area development committee members, businesspeople, magistrate for Ngwengwe Court and community police members.

Makhwira Police Unit was vandalised three  years ago by members of the community who wanted to deal with two murder suspects who were locked up at the facility.
