A group of Malawians led by Citi Pharm pharmacist Mohamed Tayub has donated drugs worth over K1 million (about $2 777) to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre to assist government address the drug shortage in the country.
Tayub said it is time Malawians helped fellow Malawians and not to necessarily depend on donors alone.
“As a Malawian, I believe, we have a responsibility to help each other and that is why as a group we made all kinds of donations to buy the drugs. We first contacted the hospital before purchasing the drugs, so that we know what they required,” he said.
According to Tayub, this donation is not the last.
“We will certainly come back, we know we cannot eliminate the problem, but we know these kinds of decisions will make a difference and change someone’s life out there and that is what drives us,” he said.
The chief hospital administrator, Themba Mhango, applauded the gesture and asked fellow Malawians to emulate such an example.
“QECH is a referral, and receives patients from many districts, therefore, receiving such a donation, is a huge plus on us. We know this donation will help our patients,” he said.
