Malawi beats Seychelles at Cricket World Cup Qualifiers

Malawi National Cricket Team on Wednesday beat Seychelles to register their second win at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group A in Kigali, Rwanda.

Malawi have so far won two, lost two and are third with four points.

In a statement issued by Cricket Malawi yesterday,  Malawi won the toss and backed their batting to set a target for Seychelles to chase.

But they got off to a rocky start losing a wicket in the first over and then an unfortunate runout in the fifth over put the batting under pressure at 32/2.

It was time to consolidate the innings as captain Moazzam Baig walked in to join inform all-rounder Sami Sohail.

Some classical batting from the two got Malawi to 61/2 in the first 10 overs.

Sami soon put his foot on the pedal hitting some lusty blows to the fence while Moazzam played wristy strokes to keep the scoreboard ticking.

This combination of power hitting and strike rotation got Malawi 81 runs off the last 10 overs getting to a total of 142/2 in 20 overs.

Sami top scored with 84 of 66 balls and Moazzam 37 in as many balls.

Malawi’s seasoned opening bowling combination of Mohamed Abdulla and Gershom Ntambalika got off to a great start, both picking up wickets consistently leaving Seychelles stumbling at 30/3 in five overs. Seychelles got back into the game with a couple of big overs, but Malawi captain Moazzam continued his hot form with the ball to pick up two crucial wickets and bowled a miserly spell to stem the flow of runs.

Sami, still fresh from his magnificent batting, was fast and tight in the death overs to seal the game for Malawi picking up two wickets in the 19th over. Mohamed, Gershom and Moazzam were the pick of the bowlers with bowling figures of 2/23, 2/28 and 2/13, respectively in their allotted four overs.

Man-of- the-match Sami Sohail finished the game with 2/12 in his two overs to win the game for Malawi with his all round performance.
