Singh: Malawi can do without donors

United Independence Party (UIP) president Helen Singh has said Malawi can do without donors, arguing corruption is what has tied Malawians to the donors.

Speaking at a rally in Mzuzu on Monday, Singh said if she assumes the presidency after May 20 elections, she will remove the donor-dependency syndrome.

Singh said the country has been ridiculed because of the dependency syndrome.

She said corruption at Capital Hill and other government offices has crippled Malawi to be donor dependent.

She said if the money generated locally can be well utilised the country will forever stand without donors.

“I just need five years to prove to donors that Malawi can do without donors. We have a lot of resources which we can utilise,” said Singh.

Singh said her government will ensure that the mining sector and other investments benefit Malawians.

She also bemoaned a huge allocation of money on presidential travels when hospitals, schools and other public facilities are in bad state.
