Malawi colleges camp for international tourney

Over 100 athletes from different colleges and universities in Malawi, began camping at Chancellor College  last Friday in readiness for a three-day international sports tournament scheduled for this weekend in Lilongwe.

Dubbed Zizama Games, the tournament will see colleges from Zimbabwe, Zambia and hosts Malawi compete in football, netball, chess, tennis (lawn and table) basketball, volleyball and track and field events.

The games, which are starting this Saturday, have been organised by the Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi (Tessam).

Tessam general secretary Mischek Munthali said the games will help the teams prepare for the Zone VI Games which will take place next year.

“Last year we faired badly at the games in Namibia because of poor preparations.  This time around, we have had good preparations to enable us do well next year hence this tournament.” said Munthali.

Apart from University of Malawi, there is Mzuzu University, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Livingstonia, Catholic University plus athletes from all technical colleges in Malawi.

Athletes from the three countries will be accommodated at the Lilongwe College of Health Sciences and the Kamuzu College of Nursing.

“Indoor sports like basketball, volleyball, tennis and netball will be hosted at the African Bible College while football will be played at the Civo Stadium.,” said Munthali.
