Malawi commends chieftaincy succession

Malawi Government has expressed satisfaction with the smooth chieftaincy succession of Lameck Ndau as sub-Traditional Authority Mnyalubanga in Nkhata Bay.

Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Augustine Mtendere said this on Thursday at Chikwina in Nkhata Bay during the installation of Lameck Ndau as sub-T/A in the area of senior chief M’bwana.

“As government, we commend this peaceful succession and we appeal to all traditional authorities to emulate the example,” said Mtendere.

There are several cases where wrangles developed during the succession time. At times, government has been accused of interfering in the chieftaincy affairs which results in legal battles.

Mtendere distanced government from the problems.

“Government is not involved in the selection of a chief. It is the chieftaincy families or even those that are not in the chieftaincy blood that create problems,” he said.

The chieftaincy rotates among Uchibwalo Kasambara, Ujumbu Mhone, Uchakwera Ndau and Ukapoti Nkhata.
