Malawi Cricket has earned a world ranking over a year after being re-admitted as member of the African Cricket Association (ACA) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Malawi is now on position 59 out of 98 countries currently ranked by the ICC. There are 170 countries that are affiliated to the ICC.

Malawi cricket had not been ranked for the past five years due to an indefinite ban that Africa Cricket Association (ACA) imposed on Malawi Cricket Union (MCU) following financial mismanagement in the previous MCU committee.

According to Malawi Cricket Union ( MCU ) president Vivek Ganesan, whose administration fought for re-admission in 2014, the ranking follows both the national team’s performance and the improvement of cricket structures in the country.

Malawi men’s team participated in the Triangular Cricket Tournament in Mozambique in May where they finished as runners-up after losing by 30 runs to the hosts.

“Aside from performance in international events, other factors such us the existence of youth development programmes, running leagues and having a secretariat were also looked into for us to be ranked. We are very happy with the development and we will work hard to improve,” said Ganesan.n
