Malawi junior darts team failed to tick as expected at the Zone V1 Darts Youth Championships at the College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex in Blantyre on Friday when they won only one medal from the available 12 gold ingots.

It was through the Under-15 girls’ category squad that Malawi, which featured Under-15 boys’ and girls’ sides and Under-18 boys’ and girls’ outfits, managed to save its face from failing to pick gold on home soil.

Despite that, Malawi also found solace in winning three silver medals; two in team events in the boys’ Under-15 and boys’ Under-18 categories and one through Under-15 boys’ star Mphatso Kachere, who lost 3-2 in the singles finals to his Botswana opponent Morious Poloka.

Malawi’s performance this year could be described as poor as compared to their feat at the 2009 Zone V1 event in Zambia where they won at least four gold medals and five silver medals to become overall champions.

During the two-day 2013 event, South Africa, which featured Under-18 boys’ and girls’ squads only, successfully defended the overall title after winning four gold medals and four silver medals.

“It was really tough for us to do well in this particular event,” said Darts Association of Malawi (DAM) vice-president Duncan Karim.

“All the same, at least we have managed to win some medals with the players that were having their first international appearance.”

Seven countries namely, Malawi, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland and Namibia participated in the event that was attended by Zone V1 darts president Raymond O’malley, technical director Kassie Pretorious and Botswana Darts Federation president Basil January.
