Malawi’s couture trend is set to take another upward curve this year as designers expect to witness the birth of Fashion Week.

The event, which will bring together Malawi and international designers, seeks to showcase Malawi’s fashion industry. It will be held for four days to allow models, fashion designers, retailers, brands or fashion houses to display their latest collections at the show.

Dawa Loga-Lemberger and Chikumbutso Mtumodzi have hatched the idea. Loga-Lemberger is the founder of Elegant Resources by Ariana Louise while seasoned journalist Mtumodzi is the owner of African Dzuwa Magazine.

“We have joined hands to bring the Fashion Week to Malawi. This will create a platform for buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, this event will let the industry know what’s in and out of the season in the Malawi fashion culture,” said Loga-Lemberger in an interview.

“Tentatively, we are looking at hosting it between May and June at a venue to be announced in due course. Malawi needs to be prepared, we have time and we will share what’s expected being one of a kind.”

Malawi Fashion Week will allow renowned and flourishing models, fashion and accessories designers as well as brands or clothing shops to display their latest clothing designs and collections. Designers pieces will be hand-selected by Malawi Fashion Week team before allowing them to be showcased.

“As such, the local chitenje will be given a chance to gain international recognition and at the same time as a product for export. This will also put the country on the international map by having one-on-one fashion presentation with foreign and local media,” explained Loga Lemberger.

The existence of the Malawi Fashion Week is an assemblage of cream and most creative fashion designers in the country to project authentic designers to the world with the honour of the models who are setting the pace for the model industry in the country.
