A New York-based organisation, AFYA Foundation, has pledged to support Malawi President Joyce Banda’s initiatives towards improving maternal health in Malawi.

Founder of AFYA Foundation Danielle Butin made the pledge on Friday when she handed over a consignment of assorted medical equipment and supplies to Malawi’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Esther Mcheka Chilenje Nkhoma.

A statement from the Permanent Representative to the UN in New York says Chilenje Nkhoma witnessed the loading of the shipment on behalf of the Malawi Government, at a ceremony held at the organisation’s headquarters in Yonkers, New York.

The shipment is valued at over $300 000 (about K90 million) and contains a range of hospital items such as mattresses, gynaecological and obstetrical supplies and equipment, medical carts, lighting sources, wheelchairs and commodes.

According to the statement, Chilenje Nkhoma said shortage of medical equipment is one of the biggest challenges facing hospitals in Malawi. She said the donated items will go a long way in saving the lives of mothers and newborn babies in many parts of the country.
