Local golfer Gudrun Egilsdottir put up a five-star display to emerge champion in B Division at the just-ended Zimbabwe Ladies Open Golf Championship at Brooke Golf club in Harare.

The 20-handicap Egilsdottir shot 89 and 93 points on first and second days respectively.

“I am very excited to have done Malawi ladies golf proud, it was such a wonderful experience,” she said in an interview on Thursday.

The tournament, which attracted a field of 93, also saw another local golfer Connie Muguvu-Karuku (handicap 16), outshining 20 other ladies in A Division to emerge day one winner. However, her overall score for the three days could not make it in the winning league and she finished on fifth position.

Six members of the Ladies Golf Union of Malawi (LGUoM) participated in this event.

The other golfers, Cathie Matura, Shelon Marques and Hariet Mariani, who were participating in an international open tournament for the first time, could not hide their excitement, saying it was an eye opener which boosted their confidence.

On her part, Muguvu-Karuku said: “This was a great experience for me and my colleagues. I am glad all went well and that we represented Malawi well although we were participating individually.

“We have made a lot of connections. Botswana and Zambia ladies have invited us to their open tournaments next year. We will definitely invite them to our own open tournament.”

The tournament’s main sponsors were Old Mutual (Zimbabwe) and its group marketing executive Lillian Mbayiwa thanked golfers from other countries including Malawi for taking part.

Airtel Malawi has rewarded the golfers with K500 000 for their spirited display. n
