Malawi Government looking for 5 star hotel operator

Malawi Government is looking for a long-term operator of the five star hotel and the Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe.

In June, government gave Sunbird Group three months to operate the facility when it was under pressure to host the aborted African Union (AU) Summit.

In an interview last week, deputy director of Tourism Patricia Liabuba said the exercise to identify the operator is underway and it will soon be completed.

“The process started some time ago and soon it will be over,” said Liabuba.

Efforts to talk to Sunbird Tourism managing director Rodger Gardener proved futile as he was said to be on holiday, but in June he argued that the period it got to operate the facility was too short.

Early this year, Sunbird Group and South African-based Peermont emerged strongest contenders interested in the five star hotel. In fact, Peermont went ahead to advertise all posts at the hotel.
