Malawi has no classic musicians—Chechamba
Legendary music tutor Wyndham Chechamba has bemoaned the absence of classical music.
“What most musicians are playing is music that will only appeal to your emotions and does not have a lot of aesthetic value,” Chechamba notes.
The ‘Old Man of Malawian music’ argues that in popular music emphasis is on making the beat danceable by instrumentation and in hymns the emphasis is on the lyrics and not the instruments while in classical music it is all the elements brought together in harmony to create music.
Chechamba said in order to showcase to the masses that there is more to music than just the throbbing of drums, strumming of guitars and beautiful lyrics, he will hold a classical music concert at the College of Medicine on March 3.
The day, which will mark Chechamba’s 80th birthday, as well as his diamond wedding anniversary as he joins the rest of Malawians to celebrate Martyrs Day.
The music tutor says he will be backed by an orchestra at the event supported by New Apostolic Church Orchestra.
