Malawi has this year hosted a national Small Christian Communities (SCCs) workshop for the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (Amecea).

Amecea chairperson and head of Lilongwe Archdiocese Tarsizio Ziyaye opened the three-day workshop in Lilongwe on Thursday.

Participants to the workshop included representatives of the eight local dioceses and national Catholic organisations such as the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) and Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP).

The workshop was held under the theme ‘SCCs embrace the word of God.’

Ziyaye said building SCCs is a pastoral priority in the Amecea region to promote the Catholic faith.

“At this workshop, you are going to consider the most important aspect of our Christian life in the region. I urge you to honestly evaluate how SCCs have helped to deepen the evangelising mission in Amecea,” he said.

The workshop, which was sponsored by the Pastoral Department of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) in conjunction with the Pastoral Department of Amecea, was facilitated by Fathers Febian Pikiti and Joseph Healey.

It is the second in a series of national SCCs workshops in the nine Amecea countries.

The workshop sought to deliberate on challenges facing SCCs in Malawi, how to conduct the body’s meetings, pastoral leadership and the involvement of the youth and children in running the affairs of SCCs.
