The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) is hosting a fifth United Nations Peace Support Operations Logistics Course for Military Defences in Sadc Countries at the Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco) in Salima.

Speaking when he opened the two-week training on Monday, Deputy MDF Commander Lieutenant General Clement Kafuwa described the UN logistics course as important in understanding logistical issues in peace support operations.

“This course will prepare you for assignments as logistical staff officers during present or future UN operations. The knowledge acquired here will broaden your horizon in various peace support logistical issues and activities,” said Kafuwa.

He said the course also acts as platform for officers from various armies to interact, share experiences and discuss how to tackle various logistical challenges.

Kafuwa thanked the British Government for funding the course.

Said course director Lieutenant Colonel Nick Barton, an Afghanistan war veteran from the British Army: “Officers will learn about integrated peace mission planning to deliver the necessary support to mission areas. The course will help them achieve mission-related situations and that participants will have also been updated in current operational realities in peace keeping activities.”

Apart from military officers from Sadc regions, officers from the Malawi Police Service and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also attending the course.
