Catholics in Malawi on Sunday cerebrated the Pope’s Vatican Pastoral Encyclical Year of Mercy which Pope Francis launched by opening some of the doors of St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, December 8, 2015 in Rome, Italy.

The Encyclical is an indicative Vatican Bull regular publication by the Holy See that spells out reasons and causes of such celebrations as the Year of Mercy to be observed by the faithful, especially at grass roots level in small Christian communities and at parish level to ensure that it makes huge impact on Christian values.

Leading the special liturgy held at Christ the King in Lilongwe Archdiocese, Archbishop Tarsizio Ziyaye said Pope Francis was inspired by the Holy Spirit to choose the year 2015/2016 as Year of Mercy with effect from Wednesday.

He urged Catholics to demonstrate mercy, forgiveness and love for humanity during the common pilgrimage until the end of year.

“We [need to] forgive those who trespass against us and show deep love to one another for the Year of Mercy to bear fruits,” he said, describing the ceremony as the first in the Catholic Church.

Vice-President Saulos Chilima graced the ceremony. n
