Chief Secretary to Government Bright Msaka has said Malawi Government has introduced organisational performance assessment system (Opas).

Msaka disclosed this at Capital Hill in Lilongwe on Friday.

He said the system has been introduced to, among others, ensure that institutions set realistic outcomes, outputs and targets in line with government’s development agenda.

Msaka emphasised the need for civil servants to work hard to deliver in their duties.

“Today marks yet another milestone in our attempts to raise the barsof excellence in the way the public service operates and delivers services.

“Apart from this, Opas has also been introduced to provide a basis for promoting quality and dedicated performance in the public service and to improve delivery of public services for the benefit of the citizenry and the country as a whole,” said Msaka.

He said performing ministries and departments will be rewarded.

Said Msaka: “Ministries and departments that will deliver accordingly will be rewarded by Her Excellency [Joyce Banda] herself. The rewards have not yet been suggested, but they can be in form of a certificate or money.

“If people are not willing to serve the nation and deliver well, they have no purpose to be left in the service, the best punishment is to remove them.”
The function was marked by the signing of Opas credentials attended by principal secretaries from different government ministries.
