In the footsteps of poets like Q. Malewezi and the late Aubrey Nazombe follows a young lady with a passion for poetry.

The soft and poetic voice in her promises a lot for the industry. She is Evelyn Pangani, a journalist.

Coming from a non poetic background, the 24-year-old has become the first female Malawian to release an anthology of poems in a CD.

Titled Nyonga za Bongo, the debut anthology which is purely in Chichewa carries 18 compositions. According to the artist, the album carries various messages, centred on pain, culture and love among people.

“It is an achievement originating from the works of the late Nazombe. I am inspired by his works and I have always dreamt to be like him. I am happy that I have managed to compile my first collection and I am promising poetry lovers more,” says Pangani who also hosts Patsinde programme on Joy Radio.

She reveals that her dream to become a poet started in 2005 while in secondary school. She says the passion has grown with time until she met renowned poet Nazombe who inspired her a lot.

Hot compositions which are also playing on many radio stations include Moyo Wina, Nyenyezi, Landireni Imfa, Chitanyu and Ndine Mboni.

Pangani, who is yet to put the CD on the market, says she is working on protecting it from piracy. She says for the past two months she has taken it to some public places to sale, and has managed to sell over 50 copies.

At present, she has started working on the album’s DVD.
