Malawi judicial officers drilled in rights

Chairperson of the Malawi Judicial Development, Andrew Nyirenda, has advised judicial officers in the country to observe human rights as championed in the country’s Constitution.

Nyirenda, a Supreme Court judge, said it is critical that judicial officers are abreast of human rights matters.

He made the remarks in Blantyre, when he opened an orientation of judicial officers in mediation on Wednesday.

Nyirenda observed that he has passion for human rights, in particular, the right to fair trial, the spirit of the Constitution.

Chairperson of the Judicial Training Committee, Chifundo Kachale, said the Malawi Judiciary introduced Mandatory Mediation Rules also referred to as the Alternative Dispute Resolution Procedures, but noted that there has been a limited use at magistrate level since its introduction.

Irish High Court Judge Roderick Murthy is leading the facilitation of the three-day orientation of judicial officers in mediation.

The European Union’s Democratic Governance Programme is supporting training whose objective is to reduce poverty through improved democratic governance and access to quality justice.
