The Junior Golf Open, which started yesterday at the Lilongwe Golf Club, ends today.

The event, which was organised by Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM), attracted junior golfers from the North, Centre and South.

According to convenor of the tournament, Stallard Mpata, the age bracket was 6-18 years.

“We have embarked on a long-term programme to develop golf in the Centre by exposing and coaching youngsters from various backgrounds. These youngsters are drawn from schools, communities near golf courses and any Malawian with interest and potential for the sport of golf,” said Mpata.

He said the idea was to scout talent for youngsters with talent for the sport.

He said the Malawi Junior Open is to test out talent at national level from the current training programme that GUoM has been conducting in the country.

Nation golf coach Chris Kachiguma has been conducting coaching clinics for junior golfers across the country for the past two years, which were sponsored by GUoM.

Mpata could not, however, reveal the prizes winners will take home today.
