Malawi legislator in aid of villagers

As reports of people being washed away due to heavy rains in most parts of Malawi increase, member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale David Luka has bought a boat for residents to use to cross Thuchila River.

The river borders Mulanje Bale and Thyolo South constituencies in southern Malawi and poses a risk to the villagers who want to cross it.

Said Luka in an interview last week: “During rainy season, we lose school children and even adults who try to cross [the river]… to board a train at Sandama. I saw the need to rescue them by buying them a boat which they use for free. Of course, I meet all the costs every month from the men who operate the boat.”

He asked government to buy a motorised boat for the people.

Village Head Fulama thanked the MP for the boat, saying it has came at the right time when people are at risk of drowning.

Fulama said three pupils nearly drowned on Monday, but were quickly rescued by the boat men.
