Mang’anda: Let’s level the field

Communication and information adviser for Unesco Harare Cluster Hezekiel Dlamini says Malawi media practitioners are enjoying greater freedom of expression and of the press because the Government of Malawi wants journalists to succeed in their profession.

Dlamini was speaking during the opening of a three-day workshop on Human Rights and Gender Investigative reporting at Linde Motel in Mponela on Monday.

Said Dlamini: “Unesco welcomes the recent developments in the country’s legislations, especially in the last two years, which have guaranteed freedoms of media practitioners.”

Dlamini said with government making sure that media practitioners work in a conducive environment, it was up to the journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.

Acting principal secretary of Information Grey Mang’anda said: “The nature of journalism training profession is such that skills training tends to get greater priority than gender awareness. This is unfortunate and there is need to level the playing field.”

The workshop was funded under the United Nations One-Programme for Malawi.
