Malawi needs more midwives—Amami
The Association of Malawi Midwives (Amami) says there is need to have more midwives in the country to reduce the workload that is in health facilities.
Mulanje District Hospital senior midwife Emma Nkhoma made the observation in Zomba last week when she presided over activities of the International Day of Midwives for the South-East Zone, which were held at Police College ground.
She noted that the standard of care rendered to the patients and clients can be improved and bring satisfaction to hard-working midwives.
Said Nkhoma: “I would like to commend you for the good job that you are tirelessly doing in various health facilities and clinics in our country. Indeed, the women out there need our helping hand and let us work together to fight the high maternal and neonatal morbidity and, mortality ratios that Malawi is experiencing.
“It is high time we reduced the ratios for a bright and happy future for Malawian families and thereby put the country on the map.”
She, therefore, appealed to the communities for support to safeguard the lives of many by, among other things, participating in various activities which promote good outcomes of pregnancies, labour and delivery.
Cleaning of maternity wards at Zomba Central Hospital, big walk, drama, poetry, and chorals characterised the day.
