Malawi Government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment for the operation of the construction industry.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Public Works Sosten Gwengwe made the commitment in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre, on Thursday when he opened the third construction fair being held under the theme ‘Advancing Beyond Borders through Efficiency and Innovation.’

“A number of initiatives, including the formulation of the construction policy, approval of joint venture and sub-contracting regulations for contractors and consultants and project registration regulations have been well supported. This is to ensure that a less challenging playing field is created for the development of the local industry,” he said.

Gwengwe also called on industry players to change their mindset and try to operate professionally to unleash their potential.

National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) board chairperson Newton Kambala said in line with the theme, it is high time the construction industry brought foreign exchange into the country.

The third national construction fair has registered 30 participants, up from 14 that participated last year.
