Malawi has said it will ensure that the country does not withdraw from international sports competitions due to lack of funding.

Sports Minister Enock Chihana said this in an interview with BBC World Service Newsday on Wednesday.

“In the past we have withdrawn from international events and that has affected the growth of sports in the country.

“But now we have made a commitment to ensure that we take part in most international events. If you look at the football we are there in World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations

“We are also going to Olympics though on solidarity, but we are still participating, that is the spirit we want to carry on,” said Chihana.

He said the country is coming from an economic crisis that is why it has been failing to participate in sports events.

Chihana is in London to cheer the Malawi team at the Games.

“My presence in London shows the commitment of government to the Olympics and sports in general. I will also attend a conference for ministers of sports, so that will give me an opportunity to learn world trend issues on how we can improve sports in Malawi,” he said.

He is today expected to meet the Malawi team in the Olympic Village.
