Malawi Police kill 3 robbers after exchanging gunfire

There was pandemonium at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) mortuary in Blantyre yesterday where scores of people scrambled to take a glance of three uncovered bodies of armed robbers killed by police after exchanging gunfire.

The trio, described by Limbe Police Station as “habitual and hunted criminals”, were shot dead just before lunch hour around the low density Mudi residential estate after police successfully foiled their attempted armed robbery.police2

Mourners, patients, guardians and other spectators swarmed QECH mortuary in their masses to see the bare bodies which were brought in a police van.

The deceased have been identified as Charles Bauleni infamously known as ‘Paudala’ (Powder) according to police, Robert Senga Maunda popularly known as ‘Robbie’ while the third one was only identified as Prince.

Their other particulars were not yet known, but according to Limbe Police Station spokesperson Chifundo Kansunje, they were all residents of Kachere Township along the Limbe-Zomba Road in Blantyre.

According to documents seen by The Nation at Limbe Police Station, the deceased were answering  several armed robbery cases in court.

They had three court bails all related to robbery with violence charges, recorded as cases number LB/CR/120/02/15, LB/CR/251/10/14 and LB/CR/164/01/15.

Kansunje said the three are believed to be part of a gang that killed police officer Victor Midiyani in Limbe in cold blood in March this year and also shot dead another police officer during the K100 million heist at First Merchant Bank (FMB) Blantyre Branch in Blantyre.

She said police had been pursuing leads about the gang’s movements until yesterday when they got a tip-off about their planned attack.

Explained Kansunje: “When the robbers arrived and saw them they started fleeing while firing at police.

“In retaliation, an exchange of gunfire ensued. The three died some distance away while a fourth accomplice escaped. No police officer was injured.”

Police officers also managed to confiscate a muzzle loader firearm which the robbers were using, according to Kansunje.

This is the fourth time in five months police have successfully foiled attempted armed robbery and killed some suspects.
