Malawi police women get JB maize

Malawi President Joyce Banda has donated an unspecified amount of maize to the Police Women Welfare group.

National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo confirmed in an interview on Thursday the donation was a personal gift from the President to the women welfare group of junior police officers.

“It is true the President has donated some bags of maize to the Police Women Welfare group, but targeting wives of sergeants and constables only,” said Manjolo.

She said the maize is going to help the junior officer’s families to save some money.

“The money they could have used to buy maize in markets will definitely be used for other things and we are happy with this gesture,” said Manjolo`.

Presidential press secretary Steve Nhlane in a separate interview said the President was responding to the request the police welfare section had made.

“It is up to the Police Women Welfare group to see how it [the maize] will be distributed. But I believe this donation will greatly help,” said Nhlane.

The President has been distributing maize to many families since she assumed office in April as one way of alleviating the problem of hunger that the families face during this lean period.
