As days draw closer to the 2014 tripartite elections, political parties that will participate in the elections have been called on to hold conventions as time is running out.

Malawi Electoral Support Network (Mesn) has made the call in a statement after noting that more parties are yet to hold conventions.

Major parties in the country such as the People’s Party (PP), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front (UDF) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have conducted conventions. Parties that are yet to hold conventions include People’s Transformation Party (Petra), the Alliance for Democracy, Progressive Peoples Movement (PPM) and National Salvation Front (Nasaf).

“Mesn is concerned that although there are only a few months left before the 2014 elections, a large number of registered political parties have not yet conducted conventions. Mesn appeals to these political parties to hold conventions as soon as possible. This will provide party members an opportunity to elect leaders in a democratic and transparent manner,” reads the statement signed by Mesn publicity secretary Steve Duwa and national coordinator Robert Silungwe.
