Malawi President tops Africa’s top 25 women achievers
As the world celebrated the International Women’s Day on Friday, The Guardian newspaper of the United Kingdom (UK) rated President Joyce Banda first in Africa’s top women achievers.
The online publication asked its readers to name women across the continent who deserve recognition.
Out of the top 25, Banda was ranked number one. She was followed by Gracia Machel, a renowned humanitarian and activist; Fatou Bensouda, the first African to become chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court; Nana Oye Lithur, Ghana’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection who is also an acclaimed human rights lawyer and Nkosazana Dhlamini-Zuma, the first woman to lead the African Union.
In a brief about Banda, the first woman to be President of Malawi and an award winning activist, the publication said she has earned praises for moves such as cutting her salary by 30 percent and auctioning the Presidential jet bought by her predecessor Bingu wa Mutharika.
