Malawi to camp in UK for C’Wealth Games

The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) has struck yet another deal with the University of Gloucestershire of United Kingdom that will see Malawian athletes camping at the university ahead of the Scotland 2014 Commonwealth Games.

This follows a successful month-long training camp at the university by the Malawian team ahead of the ongoing London 2012 Olympic Games.

MOC treasurer Jappie Mhango, who was the leader of delegation at the camp, said in an interview yesterday that the university has pledged to continue assisting in training Malawian athletes ahead of major tournaments.

“They have state-of-the-art facilities. Our athletes were exposed to modern training techniques, top-class athlete diets and sports medicine. It is a pity that they just stayed there for a month; otherwise, a long-term stay would have made a huge impact.

“But we are going to make a new deal for the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and this will be a long one other than just one month,” said Mhango.

The training camp had runners John Kayange, Mike Tebulo and Ambene Simkonda and swimmers Charlton Nyirenda and Joyce Tafatatha.

Nyirenda and Kayange returned home with Mhango after the camp last week while the rest proceeded to the Olympic Village.

Tafatatha will compete in the 50 metres free-style swimming on August 3, Simkonda will run in the 400 metres ladies category on August 3 whereas Tebulo will take part in the marathon on August 12.
