Malawi to have a heroes’ acre

Government says it has identified a site for Malawi’s first-ever national heroes’ acre in the capital city.

Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture Daniel Liwimbi said in an interview in Lilongwe that the land for establishing the acre has already been identified.

“The national heroes’ acre will be set up along the M1 Road as we are approaching Kamuzu International Airport [KIA], on the piece of land opposite to the site where American pop singer Madonna wanted to build a girls’ academy,” he said.

Liwimbi said the heroes’ acre will have an information centre, library and literature centre to enable people to easily identify Malawi’s heroes.

He said all those people who have done a great service to the nation will be laid to rest at the acre.

Meanwhile, government plans to construct a library at the mausoleum of the country’s founding president the late Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

Government has also unveiled plans to construct a mausoleum for one of the country’s multiparty freedom fighter, the late Thom Chakufwa Chihana.

However, Liwimbi said construction of the library at Kamuzu’s mausoleum and the construction of Chihana’s mausoleum are not budgeted for in the 2012/13 financial plan.
