Malawi to hold 2015 investment forum

Government, through the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (Mitc), will on June 29 and 30 this year hold a first ever Malawi investment forum aimed at showcasing some of the investment and trade opportunities that are available in the country.

According to Mitc chief executive officer Clement Kumbemba, the forum would also be one way of rebranding the country through promotion of specific investment opportunities for both local and foreign investors.

Kumbemba added the forum would further act as platform for both local and international investors to foster their joint ventures. He was speaking Tuesday at a press conference in Lilongwe.

“Malawi will be hosting this forum for the first time and we expect to expose participants to a wide range of investment opportunities that will be deliberately packaged for the event.

“The event will also provide a rare opportunity for high level government officials to discuss and get insight from both domestic and international investors on issues pertinent to achieving an idea, enabling environment for doing business,” explained Kumbemba.

The forum is deemed to be the largest and is expected to attract about 300 policy and decision makers from all over the globe. Countries and groups that are also expected to take part include the Brics group that has countries like Brazil, Russia, India China and South Africa.

“We are expecting guests from as far as the United States of America [USA], United Kingdom [UK] Belgium, Italy and other African countries,” he said.

Besides the investment projects contained in the Malawi investment projects compendium document, Kumbemba said Malawi is expected to package specific investment opportunities in seven sectors of Mining, Agriculture and Agro processing, Energy, Infrastructure (transport, telecommunication and ICT) Tourism and Financial services.

Meanwhile, Kumbemba has appealed to the media to help in disseminating information about the forum.

“This will be an annual event and we would like to ask you the media to assist us in the promotion of the event. Other than that, we would like also to request those Malawians involved in bankable projects to come out and work with others in the preparation for the opportune forum,” he explained.

Mitc is one of the statutory bodies mandated to promote trade investment for the country. The 2015 Malawi investment forum is one such way of making sure that the goal is achieved.
