Malawi to invest more in science, technology

Malawi Government says there is political will from President Joyce Banda to see advances in science and technology; hence, plans to establish six new universities all in the area of science and technology.

Lonely Magreta, Ministry of Education Principal Secretary (Primary and Secondary Education), said this in her closing address of the National Schools Science Fair at Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu on Wednesday.

Head of documentation and information services in the National Commission of Science and Technology (NCST) Gift Kadzamira said her organisation will continue to implement various programmes and strategies aimed at contributing to the transformation of the economy from a resource base to knowledge based one through application of science and technology and such programmes as the Annual Science and Technology Competition.

Twenty-seven schools took part in the fair and Mwatibu Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) were overall winners. They went away with K100 000 cash and assorted books from Anglia Books.

Last year’s winners, Mary Mount Secondary School, came second.
