Malawi unveils postcodes

Malawi has formally unveiled postcodes following their publication in the Malawi Government Gazette this week.

The new postcodes, announced by Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), among others, are expected to enhance service delivery in the post and courier industry following the introduction of a comprehensive system of property location, numbering, mapping and any associated processes.

Notice number 37 of the Malawi Government Gazette published in local newspapers this week said the postcodes became effective on May 10 this year and were developed by Macra under the National Addressing System project.

Efforts to get comment from Macra spokesperson Clara Mwafulirwa proved futile as she requested for a questionnaire which had not yet been responded to by press time while Macra director general Godfrey Itaye could not be reached on numerous attempts.

In July last year, Macra urged Malawians to embrace the National Addressing System for the social economic development of the country.

Blantyre City Council (BCC) director of town planning Costly Chanza is also on record as having said the project has a lot of social and economic benefits for Malawians.

The National Addressing and Postcode project is a multi-stakeholder project which has established a comprehensive national addressing system with various components.
