Malawi vendors add K100 000 to President’s reward

A union of vendors chairpersons in old Malawi’s capital, Zomba, has pledged to add K100 000 (about $277) to President Joyce Banda’s K2 million (about $5 555) reward that will help to identify author of a letter in which she purportedly announced her resignation.

Chairperson for the main market, Ayatu Chidothi, made the announcement on Tuesday, following a meeting they held at Mponda Primary School ground.

He said the purported letter, which went viral on the social media, has brought confusion among Malawians and the vendors would like to see the one behind it brought to book.

“As concerned citizens of this country, we have come together as chairpersons of all the vendors in Zomba City to contribute to the cause. Our State president has offered K2 million and we are just adding on that,” he said.

According to him, the money was not being collected from vendors in the markets.

On her return from Equatorial Guinea, where she went to attend the Africa-South America Summit, the President disputed the letter during a media conference at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre saying: “This shows that someone somewhere is panicking.”
