Malawi is working on extraditing the fugitive Blantyre businessperson Misozi Chanthunya who was arrested in South Africa on Tuesday, police and the Ministry of Justice confirmed on Wednesday.

In an interview on Wednesday, National Police spokesperson Davie Chingwalu said there are procedures to be followed before Chanthunya is brought into Malawi. He said, among other things, Chanthunya has to appear before a court in South Africa and Malawi Police officers will have to travel to South Africa for the process.

“As of now, we are still waiting for information from Interpol for us to move forward,” he said.

Chingwalu, who dismissed reports on some social networks that Chanthunya had either escaped or committed suicide as false, said as of Wednesday, Malawi Police officers had not yet left for South Africa.

Ministry of Justice spokesperson Apoche Itimu also confirmed that government was working on the extradition process, but said at the moment it would be premature to release any information.
