Malawi’s artists in Aids Day concert

Malawi’s urban music stars have teamed up in a concert to rally the youth against risky behaviour in times of HIV and Aids.

The World Aids Day concert on December 1 at Shire Highlands Hotel, Blantyre, will bring together Kumbu, Theo Thomson, Young Kay Armstrong, DJ Boo, Tay Grin and Piksy with poet Q Malewezi to reinforce behavioural change among the worst hit age group.

Lead organiser Innocent Mkandawire said his Blueprint Brand Agency has partnered an array of actors, both governmental and non-governmental, to deliver more than just the music and mingling with celebrities on the candlelit red-ribbon show.

Other activities include talks on risky lifestyles, photoshoots with the stars, freestyle competitions, HIV testing and counselling as well as condom distribution, he said.

 “Artists constitute an influential voice in reducing social woes. Apart from creating awareness and delivering an entertaining music experience, the concert seeks to make positive emotional connection with the target audience which is at risk.  With activism and dynamism, we can help build a safer Malawi,” said Mkandawire in an interview.

His agency envisions making the show an annual phenomenon.

To raise the hype for the inaugural edition, the outfit is negotiating with Armstrong, Tay Grin and Piksy to record a theme song. The collabo will be beamed on a big screen to be mounted at the show which will benefit Bangwe Orphan Care Centre.
