Malawi’s Queens want to break into top 3

Malawi national netball team (the Queens) coach Griffin Saenda is aiming at breaking into top three at the Fast5 World Series Netball Tournament to be staged in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Queens flew out of Malawi on Friday for New Zealand and the tournament is scheduled to run from November 9 to 11.

Saenda said it is high time the Queens broke the jinx and sneaked into the top three in the world.

“We have been number five for a very long time, now we need to aim higher and break into top three.

“Of course, it is a tall order, but I believe with commitment and proper approach, we can do it,” said Saenda just before departure.

The Queens will start their campaign against world champions Australia on November 9 before facing Jamaica later the same day.

On November 10, the Queens will line up against hosts New Zealand, continental rivals South Africa and England.

Saenda also admitted that the opening game will be very tough.

“But it is a challenge worthy embracing, we are not intimidated, we’ll take every game as it comes,” said Saenda.

One of the key players Mwayi Kumwenda also said the Queens are determined to perform wonders.

“We are prepared and our aim is to finish at least as runners-up and we are confident of achieving that,” said Kumwenda.

The Queens will spar with Australia, England and New Zealand before the start of the actual tournament.
