Malawi’s dramatist Lulanga to perform in Korea

Malawi’s actor Mike Langa Lulanga is among artists from across the world to perform during the World Council of Churches (WCC) Annual Assembly in Busan in Republic of Korea in November next year.

The gathering, termed Mandang in Korean native language, will draw dramatists, photographers, musicians and other artists from WCC member countries.

Literally meaning a traditional courtyard that connects different parts of a house, the 10th Madang promises a worthwhile space for cultural encounters and celebration of a diversity of talents.

In an interview, Lulanga, a member of Yendezo religious theatre group, said he will perform a one-man play, Tears of the Land.

“I started doing monodrama some years ago, but the Madang invitation gives me another opportunity to show the world that drama has room in preaching the gospel,” said the dramatist-cum-journalist, who joined the Malawi Defence Force this year.

Testifying to drama as a powerful weapon of evangelism, Tears of the Land alludes to the prophecies of Jeremiah (14:2-6). From its traditional setting, it focuses on the plight of people in developing countries who are the worst hit by injustices resulting from climate change and calls on Christians around the world to pray for lasting solutions from God.

While in Korea, Lulanga is expected to take part in various exhibitions and training.

Previously, he staged Simon from Cyrene at Kwandengezi Society Methodist Church in South Africa.

To be shortlisted for Madang, the artists were nominated by
their churches in their countries.
