Malawi’s ruling PP to announce NEC members

Three weeks after holding their first ever convention, Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP) is yet to announce 16 names of ordinary members to be included in the national executive committee (NEC).

The PP constitution provides for 67 position holders, 16 ordinary members and 12 ex-officials in the NEC.

The party’s publicity secretary Hophmally Makande said in an interview on Tuesday that a vote for ordinary members to make part of the NEC was cast during the August convention in Blantyre and that names will be announced soon.

Asked whether the delay in releasing names would not create room for tampering with the results, Makande argued the elections were conducted by an independent body, with no interest in affairs of the party.

PP hired the Electoral Commission (EC) to preside over the elections, a move that also raised questions from some quarters given that the commission presides over national elections.
