Malawi’s stand-up comedians face Solomonic Peacocks

Three stand-up comedians from the newly formed Ajomasiwe on Sunday sprayed laughing powder on patrons at the Solomonic Peacocks performance at the Steers Gardens in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre.

Madalitso Nyambo, Wales Chigwenembe and Andrea Thonyiwa, also known as Mr Jokes, sent patrons into stitches of laughter before Solomonic Peacocks brought on stage their 2011 release, Seal of Confession. The three comedians poked fun at the Malawi social scene and tackled various issues.

Ajomasiwe used the platform as a dress rehearsal for their maiden show, slated for September 30, according to the group’s member and playwright Charles Simbi.

Before Solomonic Peacocks staged Seal of Confession, Zambian ex-commercial sex worker Precious Kawinga gave a heart-rending inspirational talk on HIV and Aids. For one, she took a swipe at men of the collar who tell their followers to stop taking antiretroviral drugs (ARVs).

Kawinga, who also took time to share her positive living experiences after she was found HIV-positive, urged couples to protect each other from contracting the virus that causes Aids.

Solomonic Peacocks director MacArthur Matukuta said they will document their recent performances.

“This is the first phase of a project. We will produce a documentary of our performances and the motivational talks Precious has been giving to communities. There is so much to learn,” said Matukuta.

The one and a half hours play unravels the dilemma of a priest who has to find money to help his ailing mother at a time government dangled a carrot for anyone
who knows who murdered the vice-president’s daughter.
