Ntchisi Police in central Malawi on Tuesday arrested a clinical officer at the district hospital for allegedly administering an abortion drug on his girlfriend who eventually died.

The district’s police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha confirmed the arrest in an interview on Thursday. He said the police plan to exhume the body after discovering that the hospital has no record of the death.

“Inquiries are still underway to find out the cause of the death. We are at the moment in the process of working on procedures to exhume the body,” he said.

M’bumpha identified the suspect as Alphat Tembo (46) from Phale Village, T/A Khombedza in Salima, whereas the deceased, 40-year-old Leginet Nkhoma, is from Jasesi Village, T/A Kalumo in Ntchisi.

The spokesperson claimed that the incident happened on September 1 2012 around 3pm. He said the deceased, accompanied by her sister, went to the hospital where Tembo allegedly administered drugs for abortion.

M’bumpha alleged that Tembo, who was in love with Nkhoma, was responsible for the pregnancy. He said at the time of the abortion, Nkhoma was five-months pregnant.
