A local manufacturing company, Sharma Industries, has made it big on the international stage by being among 37 vibrant manufacturing companies worldwide to win an international award for leadership in image and quality.

The award was presented at the 37th International Award for Leadership by the Trade Leaders’ Club in image and quality in Madrid, Spain on December 12 2011, at an event that brought together businessmen from all the continents and many different industrial and commercial branches.

More than 30 companies worldwide were awarded this prize at the event.

“We are excited to be awarded this prize. It is something good and this gives us the momentum to keep on producing quality goods,” said the company’s managing director Bob Sharma on Wednesday this week.

He noted that this is testimony that Malawian companies can make it big on the international scene provided they produce good quality goods to satisfy their customers.

Some of the companies that won the awards include Al-Amin Group from Bangladesh, BMS Sarl Groupe, a western African company, Cansa Kimya Sanayi Limited from Instabul, Turkey, Ericsson, a communications solutions company from Sweden and a public company, Tanzania Ports Authority.

This is not the first time for Malawian enterprenuers to shine on the global stage.

Last year on April 11, a small-scale enterpreneur Mathew Pemba also received an international star award for leadership in quality award in gold category.

Pemba is the owner of Pemba Rubber Stamp based in Blantyre.

Sharma Industries, a subsidiary of Sharma Group of Companies, was incorporated on September 12 2005 and operate as a family business.

The company, which has a workforce of 300 and started its operations in 1974, manufactures plastic products such as pipes bottles, plastic carrier bags and tissue papers.n
