A stationary Malawian fuel tanker has killed scores of people and injured many others in Mozambique on Thursday.
Principal Secretary for Transport and Public Works Moffat Chitimbe confirmed that the truck belonging to Entity Walkers exploded on Thursday after a mob started siphoning fuel from it.
He said the truck had a break down at near a village Kaphiridzanje in Tete Province.
Some reports say that over 73 people have been killed and 110 people have been injured in the incident.
Chitimbe said Malawian Transporters Association has been complaining about similar malpractices whenever they have breakdowns in Mozambique.
“This happens from time to time. We have had receiving complaints from our transporters that every time a truck has a breakdown mobs syphon fuel from the tankers.
“We have been reporting the issue to Mozambique government through our embassy in Mozambique and we have not yet had any response,” said Chitimbe.
Mozambique media also reported that medical teams rushed to the scene of the accident and evacuated the injured people.
