Lilly Alfonso is among the continent’s fashion designers heading for the Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) in August.

According to the AFWL website, the haute couture fashion week will bring together 50 designers and 100 models on the sidelines of the 2012 Olympic Games. With about 10 000 guests, the flamboyant mix of Western and African culture seeks to promote and interpret Africa’s rich ethnic culture through contemporary fashion creations.

“I am really excited about it. It is good for Malawi. I got the invitation after some friends in the fashion industry recommended that I participate,” said the Italy-trained owner of Lillies Creations.

To bid farewell to Malawians, Alfonso and Urban Life online magazine have organised a fashion show at the Lilongwe Old Town Mall on June 29.

“This will be the chance for Malawians to see what I will showcase at the fashion week. They will have a chance to tell me how I can improve my offerings,” said Alfonso.

According to Urban Life director Samuel Chiwaka, the Lilongwe affair, dubbed The Last Supper, will be brightened by a commentary from The Road Taken poet Q Malewezi and acoustic music from Lulu.

“It will be a unique affair as we will unveil the first muse model in Malawi—Cece Kamwendo. This is simply done to ensure the dresses convey their message to the audience,” said Chiwaka.

According to Chiwaka, some shops and restaurants at the mall will be open till late that night.
