In an interview with Nation on Sunday Benbow yesterday expressed happiness that for the first time she put Malawi on the map.

“It was nice beating the Papua New Guineans, Australians and South Africans, but the Zimbabweans were strong and experienced. The boats were very big as well. Mine was seven metres long and a sloop-slept x 4,” said Benbow, who raced over 322 kilometres.

She said finishing on position two was unbelievable.

“Everyone was quite surprised to see a Malawian of my age winning this while beating more experienced Zimbabweans. The mayor of Harare, too, who was the guest of honour at the event, was surprised to see me win this position.

“When receiving the medal, I wore my chitenje detailing the map of Malawi,” she explained.
